Laurie Abrams

Laurie Abrams, 46 – Donor

Seminole, Florida
Washington Hospital Center
Donated to Callisto Madavo

Laurie Abrams traveled all the way from Florida to participate in the swap program. The mother of two teenagers says she overheard a phone conversation about a family friend’s need for a kidney. Without hesitation, she stepped forward. Abrams would not prove medically compatible for the friend, William (Wyatt) Miller. Still, when she heard about the exchange, she jumped at the opportunity to participate. In fact, just before surgery and under some minor sedation, Abrams claimed her kidney would be smiling on its way to its new home. “It’s just my nature,” she said. “I like helping people.” Abrams has a lot of practice helping others. She’s a full-time waitress. Now, she says she’ll devote a lot of her off time to serving as an organ donation advocate in the Tampa, Florida region.
