An ultrasound guided core needle biopsy is one approach our breast surgeons use at the Ourisman Breast Health Center to remove breast tissue for microscopic analysis.
In preparation for this non-surgical procedure, you receive local anesthesia in the affected area.
What should I expect?
- During the procedure, you lie on your back or side. This allows our team to use ultrasound technology to create an image of the inside of your breast.
- Your breast surgeon will guide a hollow needle to the affected breast tissue based on that image.
- Then, your breast surgeon removes several samples of your affected breast tissue through the needle. Often, a marker is left in place to designate the area that has been sampled.
- Our breast cancer pathologist will examine the biopsy and you will receive the results as soon as possible.
