Ultrasound Guided Core Needle Biopsy

An ultrasound guided core needle biopsy is one approach our breast surgeons use at the Ourisman Breast Health Center to remove breast tissue for microscopic analysis.

In preparation for this non-surgical procedure, you receive local anesthesia in the affected area.

What should I expect?

  1. During the procedure, you lie on your back or side. This allows our team to use ultrasound technology to create an image of the inside of your breast.
  2. Your breast surgeon will guide a hollow needle to the affected breast tissue based on that image.
  3. Then, your breast surgeon removes several samples of your affected breast tissue through the needle. Often, a marker is left in place to designate the area that has been sampled.
  4. Our breast cancer pathologist will examine the biopsy and you will receive the results as soon as possible.
