MRI Guided Core Needle Biopsies

MRI guided core needle biopsies are an important method for accurately determining the cause of MRI abnormalities. At the Ourisman Breast Health Center, our breast care specialists are skilled in using magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI guided biopsies to take a sample of your breast tissue.

What should I expect?

  1. Our first step in the procedure is to numb your breast with local anesthesia.
  2. Once you are comfortable, your doctor creates an image of your breast using advanced MRI technology, and guides a hollow needle to the affected breast tissue based on that image.
  3. Your doctor then removes a small sample of cells through the needle. This procedure is often used to take samples of the abnormal areas your doctor cannot easily detect on a digital mammogram or ultrasound. Often, a marker is left in place to designate the area that has been sampled.
  4. Our breast cancer pathologist will examine the tissue and you will receive the results as soon as possible.
