Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine provides a variety of services to critically ill children, children with diseases of the lung and airway and children requiring sedation for painful or stressful procedures.

The philosophy of the Division is to provide high quality, high-tech sophisticated evidence-based care to patients in a compassionate environment that embraces Patient and Family Centered Care. There is strong emphasis on inclusion of the patient and his/her family in the plan of care and medical decision making while minimizing anxiety, pain and discomfort. Patients benefit from state-of-the-art care that is available from the faculty of Georgetown University School of Medicine who are involved in cutting edge research and education of pediatric critical care medicine.

Some of our services and programs include:

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Transport Service

In collaboration with MedSTAR Transport Service, we offer ground or air transport from any medical facility in the mid-Atlantic region. Transports are performed by experienced medical flight nurses with remote supervision by pediatric intensivists. Pre-transport consultation by a pediatric intensivist is available.

A team of five pediatric intensivists supervises the care of all patients. The Pediatric Procedural Sedation Service at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital provides sedation for any medical procedure or test that is painful or anxiety-producing. Pediatric intensivists provide deep sedation services for elective painful or uncomfortable procedures for both pediatric inpatients and outpatients, including lumbar puncture, bone marrow aspiration, upper and lower gastroenterology (GI) endoscopies, liver and kidney biopsies, ear exams, etc. In a family-friendly environment, parents may stay with their children until they are fully sedated and are allowed back into the procedure room before the child wakes up. Same-day appointments are available.
